I was away for work, the day was finished, dinner was done, and I was sitting alone in an apartment. There was nothing particularly wrong. I was safe, the trip was going well, and I had more than enough ways to fill the evening if I wanted to. Television, podcasts, social media, work, messages. All the usual noise was available.And yet, for a moment, I felt lonely.That surprised me because I actually spend quite a lot of time on my own and, generally, I like it. I enjoy walking on my own. I like having time to think. Writing usually needs some quiet. After a busy week, time alone can feel like a relief rather than a problem.But that night it felt different.<h3>Alone and lonely are not the same thing</h3>Being alone is simply a circumstance. Sometimes it is even a gift. It gives us space to think, reset, pray, write, walk, or simply hear ourselves again after a noisy week.Loneliness is something else. It is the point where the absence of other people starts to feel heavier than the quiet itself.I think that distinction matters, particularly now. We live in a world where we are rarely truly disconnected. There is always something to scroll, watch, read or listen to, and we can fill every spare moment without ever having to sit with ourselves.So perhaps the better question is not, “Am I alone?” but, “How does being alone feel right now?”<ul><li>Does the quiet restore you, or does it start to weigh on you?</li><li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Does the space help you think, or make you feel disconnected?</li></ul>That night, I realised the answer had shifted.For a little while I sat with it, and then I did something very simple. I called my husband.Nothing profound happened. He did not need to solve anything. We just talked.And almost immediately I was reminded of something I already knew. I was not actually alone.<h3>Sometimes the answer is a person</h3>That moment stayed with me because it reminded me that loneliness is not something to dismiss or explain away. For some people, it is a deep and persistent experience, and a single phone call cannot simply make it disappear.Sometimes what we need is not another podcast, another television show or another hour scrolling through other people’s lives. And I’m not sure AI can adequately fill the void, though ChatGPT and I have some great conversations!We need a person.A friend. A colleague. Someone in the family. Someone whose voice reminds us that we belong somewhere.For me, that phone call was enough. The moment passed, the trip continued, and I came home with a slightly greater appreciation for the ordinary things I had missed.So perhaps another useful question is this:<ul><li>When you feel lonely, who do you call?</li><li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Not who could you call in theory. Who would you actually call?</li></ul>I think that matters because relationships do not maintain themselves automatically. In a busy life, it is very easy to assume people know we care, assume we will catch up soon, assume there will always be another chance. I still need time to write. I still value thinking time and the space that comes when nobody needs anything from me for a while.Solitude is important. In fact, I suspect many of us need more of it.But solitude should restore us, not isolate us.We should be able to sit quietly with ourselves without immediately needing to fill the space. But when the quiet starts to feel lonely, we should not be too proud, too busy or too independent to reach out.And for me, there is one more layer.My faith reminds me that I am never truly alone. Jesus is with me in the crowded room, on the plane, on the walk and in the quiet apartment at the end of the day.I know that.But knowing it does not mean I will never feel lonely for a moment.Faith does not require me to deny the ache when it comes. It gives me somewhere to place it, and the courage to respond rather than hide from it.Perhaps that is what I am learning. Being alone is not the problem. Sometimes it is exactly what we need.But when being alone starts to feel like loneliness, reach out.And remember that needing people is not a weakness. It is part of being human.

Alone Is Not the Same as Lonely

One of the harder things about leadership is knowing when to step in and when to step back.The longer you lead, the easier it becomes to see the problem, anticipate where something is heading and know how you would fix it. The temptation is to jump in, make the decision and move things along. It is usually quicker and sometimes certainly easier.But if you do that every time, nobody else gets the chance to lead.So over time, good leaders learn to step back. We delegate more. We give people room to make decisions. We allow them to work things through in their own way rather than expecting them to do it exactly as we would.That sounds straightforward, but I think we sometimes blur the distinction between delegation and empowerment, and they are not actually the same thing.<h3>Delegation is not empowerment</h3>When I delegate something, I am still responsible for checking back in. I need to know the work has been done, review the outcome where appropriate, provide feedback and, just as importantly, give the person confidence that they got it right.That last part matters.And I am certainly not saying I always get it right.Sometimes we delegate something and then become too hands off. We tell ourselves we are trusting the person, but really we have just handed the work over and moved on to the next thing.Then something goes wrong.Suddenly we are back in the middle of it, pulling the work back, taking control and trying to fix the problem. The person who originally had the responsibility is left feeling belittled, neglected or like they have failed.That is not where we want to end up.I have struggled with that tension throughout my career. I like to be in control. But I also quite like handing work off and moving on, sometimes forgetting that delegation does not remove my responsibility as the leader.That is the fine line.Delegation is part of developing capability. I give you something to own, I let you do it, then I come back and check. If you have done it well, I tell you. If something needs to change, we work through it. Then next time I can step back a little further.Eventually, if we have done that properly, delegation can become empowerment.I know you can do it. You know you can do it. It should be to build other leaders, people who can take the organisation somewhere you cannot.If the people around us never become better than us, we probably have not done enough to develop them.I can think of times in my own career when I hit a ceiling, and the ceiling was not the organisation.It was the leader above me.A leader who could not let go. A leader who did not want to see someone else rise too far. Eventually, when there is nowhere left to grow, capable people leave.I know I have.That experience has stayed with me.Good leaders create room. They give people opportunities. They allow them to succeed in their own way. And if those people eventually outgrow the role, the team or even the leader, that should be something we are proud of, not threatened by.<h3>Knowing when to step back in</h3>None of that means we disappear.That is where empowerment can become confused with avoidance.A person may genuinely need time to work through a problem. A team may need to wrestle with an issue rather than having the answer handed to them. Someone may make a decision differently from the way I would have made it, and that does not make their decision wrong.But there are also times when a leader does need to step back in.A project may have stopped progressing. Responsibility may have become unclear. A decision may have been circulating for so long that nobody is quite sure who is supposed to make it anymore. The consequences of getting something wrong may have moved beyond an individual's learning experience and begun to affect the broader organisation.At that point, continuing to stand back is not necessarily empowerment.It may simply be avoidance.So the question is not just, “Have I delegated this?”It is, “Have I delegated it well?”Did I explain what success looked like? Did the person know what authority they had? Did we agree when I would check back in? Have I given them feedback? Do they know that I trust them?Sometimes what looks like a performance problem is actually a delegation problem.We handed over a task, disappeared and assumed the other person would somehow know what was in our head.Then we are disappointed when the outcome is not what we expected.Good delegation requires clarity at the beginning, trust in the middle and follow up at the end.And when someone gets it right, we need to tell them.That is how delegation becomes empowerment.The first time I might say, “Take this on and let's check it together when you are finished.”Later it becomes, “You've done this before. I trust you to make the call.”That is the progression we should be aiming for.Not a team that needs the leader to approve everything, and not a leader who proudly talks about empowerment while having no idea what is actually happening.The goal is to build capable people who understand their authority, exercise good judgement and are confident enough to lead.And, hopefully, one day, do it better than we did.

The Fine Line Between Delegation and Empowerment

Six months.I am not entirely sure where those weeks went.Actually, that is not true. I know exactly where they went. Into work, travel, conferences, meetings, family, commitments and a diary that seems to refill itself faster than I can empty it.Which is probably why this particular article has been sitting in my head.I turned 55 this year, and I have found myself thinking more and more about what the next stage of life looks like.We keep calling it retirement, but I am not sure I really believe in retirement as a concept.Martin turns 65 in a few months, so naturally we talk about it. He officially retired on 30th June. When will I retire? Will I work until 60, 65 or 70?The truth is, I have absolutely no idea.What I do know is that I cannot imagine simply stopping.I like working. I like being useful. I enjoy leading, building things, solving problems, mentoring people and taking on interesting challenges.What I am less sure about is whether I want to keep doing all of that in exactly the same way for another 10 or 15 years.I was thinking about this recently while sitting on yet another plane, away from my family. I had realised how quickly opportunities, commitments and worthwhile work can fill the diary, often before we stop to ask whether they still fit the plan. <a data-mce-href="https://uniqueleaders.com.au/blog/on-track-or-off-course" href="https://uniqueleaders.com.au/blog/on-track-or-off-course" target="_blank" rel="noopener">On Track or Off Course?</a>I still struggle with that.For much of my career, saying yes has served me pretty well. Say yes to the challenge. Say yes to the opportunity. Get on the plane. Have the meeting. Start the new project. Work out how to make it happen.And I am certainly not suggesting I want a life where nothing happens.But at 55, I am becoming much more conscious that I am no longer trying to build a career. I have one. And I love it.That changes things.The question is becoming less about what else I can achieve and more about how I want to use the time, experience and opportunities I have in front of me.I look at people who continue working well into their 60s and 70s. Some clearly love what they are doing and have made a conscious choice to keep going. Others seem to be doing exactly what they have always done because they have never made a conscious choice to do anything different.That is what I do not want.I do not want the second half of my life to be a long wind down to nothing particularly purposeful. But I also do not want to wake up at 70 and realise I have spent another 15 years with the same ridiculous diary, flying around the country and saying yes to everything because that is simply what Michelle does.I want this stage to have value.I want to keep contributing and leading. I want to use what I have learnt over more than 30 years of work and leadership. I want to mentor more people, write more, speak where I can genuinely add something and perhaps finally turn some of the things sitting in my head into something other people can use.That idea of legacy has been part of my thinking for a while. I have written before about the fact that legacy is not something we suddenly think about when we reach the end of a career. It is built through the people we invest in and the contribution we make along the way. <a data-mce-href="https://uniqueleaders.com.au/blog/build-a-legacy-that-lasts" href="https://uniqueleaders.com.au/blog/build-a-legacy-that-lasts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Build a Legacy That Lasts</a>But I am beginning to think there is another part of legacy too.At some point you have to capture what you know.There is not much point accumulating decades of experience, mistakes, lessons, stories and hard won wisdom if all of it disappears when you eventually leave the room.Perhaps that is why I keep coming back to writing.I have talked about writing a book for years. I have lots of ideas. I have plenty of stories. What I have been less successful at is actually writing the book.Apparently thinking about writing does not count.So perhaps part of this next stage is starting smaller. Writing articles. Capturing ideas as they emerge. Turning some of what I have learnt into material that can outlast the meeting, the conference or the particular role I happen to be in today.I also know I want more space.More time with Martin and my family. More travel that does not involve a conference agenda. More room to think rather than constantly moving from one commitment to the next.I wrote at the end of last year about freedom in leadership and the need to decide what we carry forward and what we let go. I admitted then that I am not particularly good at letting go. Nothing much has changed on that front. <a data-mce-href="https://uniqueleaders.com.au/blog/freedom-to-lead-forward" href="https://uniqueleaders.com.au/blog/freedom-to-lead-forward" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Freedom to Lead Forward</a>Perhaps this is the next version of that question.What do I want to carry into the next 20 years, and what have I done for long enough?I do not know whether this next stage starts at 60, 65 or 70. I’m 55. I’m Not Ready to Retire. So What Comes Next?

At the start of the year, most of us had a plan.Clear goals. Good intentions. A sense of what this year would look like.And then the year started.Work accelerated. Opportunities came. Priorities shifted. For me, that meant launching a new program, speaking at two international conferences, and saying yes to things that mattered in the moment. On Track or Off Course?

Leadership often arrives before we feel ready for it.A promotion. A new role. A team suddenly looking to you for direction. For many leaders, the shift happens quickly, and the expectations can feel heavy.Enhancing Your Leadership Skills by Professor V. K. Simon is a practical introduction to leadership for those moments. It doesn’t try to impress. It doesn’t overcomplicate things. It simply walks through the core principles that sit underneath effective leadership.Interestingly, there is very little publicly available about the author, and the book is published by a smaller press. While we don’t know much about Professor Simon’s background, the premise of the book is sound and grounded in well established leadership thinking. Sometimes a resource doesn’t need a big name behind it to be useful.<h3>Leadership as a Journey, Not a Title</h3>At its core, the book defines leadership as the ability to inspire and influence others toward a shared purpose. Leadership is not confined to formal positions. It can be demonstrated at every level of an organisation and in many aspects of life.A strong theme throughout is that leadership is not a destination. Effective leaders do not rest on their laurels. They continue to learn, adapt and grow as the world around them changes.That framing alone is helpful for new leaders who may feel pressure to have everything figured out from day one.<h3>What the Book Covers</h3>This is a broad, foundational handbook rather than a narrative read.
