On Track or Off Course?

At the start of the year, most of us had a plan.

Clear goals. Good intentions. A sense of what this year would look like.

And then the year started.

Work accelerated. Opportunities came. Priorities shifted. For me, that meant launching a new program, speaking at two international conferences, and saying yes to things that mattered in the moment. I also took time out for a holiday, which gave me space to think more clearly.

Now, as we head towards the end of March, it feels like the right time to pause.

Not to reset.

But to check in.

What did you set out to do this year?

It sounds simple, but most leaders have already moved past their original plan without revisiting it.

The pace of the year can pull you forward before you have had a chance to reflect.

Question:

What were your goals at the beginning of the year, and are they still visible in how you are spending your time?

What has actually dominated your thinking?

There is often a gap between what we intended to focus on and what has actually consumed our attention.

Urgency has a way of taking over.

Sometimes for good reason. Sometimes by default.

Reflection:

What has taken most of your energy so far this year, and was that by design or by demand?

Where have you said yes without checking the plan?

Opportunities come quickly. Especially for leaders who are trusted and visible.

But every yes carries a cost.

Time. Focus. Energy.

Question:

Have you said yes to things that align with your direction, or simply because they were in front of you?

What needs recalibration?

A check-in is not about judgment. It is about adjustment.

Plans are not meant to be rigid. They are meant to guide.

As we move into April, we are entering an interesting crossover.

For some, it is the final quarter of the financial year.

For others, it is the start of the second quarter of the calendar year.

Either way, it is a natural point to step back and realign.

Action:

What needs to shift for the next quarter to better reflect what actually matters?

Final Thought

Leadership is not just about setting direction at the beginning of the year.

It is about staying connected to that direction as the year unfolds.

A simple check-in now can change the trajectory of the months ahead.

Not by doing more.

But by doing what matters, on purpose.
